Police: Trucker ejected, injured after crash on eastbound I-80/94 exit ramp

A truck driver suffered serious injuries early Tuesday after police said he was ejected when he sideswiped another semi pulled over on the Burr Street exit ramp on eastbound Interstate 80/94 in Gary.

The crash, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, restricted eastbound travel on the major thoroughfare for eight hours and left Amazon packages from the stopped semi all over the exit ramp, according to a release from Sgt. Glen Fifield, public information officer with the Lowell Post of the Indiana State Police.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a semi‑truck hauling Amazon packages was stopped in the gore area, which is the berm between the ramp lane and the interstate travel lanes. The driver had exited the vehicle and was reportedly standing outside the truck urinating when another semi‑truck sideswiped the parked truck, police said.

The driver of the moving semi, 33, of Chicago, was ejected from his vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary for emergency treatment. The driver of the parked semi, 31, of Dearborn, Michigan, was not injured.

Eastbound lanes of I‑80/94 were restricted for approximately eight hours for crash investigation and cleanup before the roadway was fully reopened. WAFFCO Towing and Recovery assisted at the scene, and the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation.

Charges may be considered once the investigation is complete.
